Had a 30L...16" high I believe x 36 x 12. I loved it, but thought it could have been 2" taller.

I know everyone here is a huge fan of 40 gallon breeder tanks, but I was curious if anyone else has a 45 gallon tank maybe, or even a 38 gallon tank? both being 36 x 12

A 45G is a unique shape to be sure. Many years ago I actually had 3 of them.
I think it just has dimensions that will fit certain a unique need or desire. The one real criticism I'll offer is that it really presents something of a tipping hazard even with the stand properly secured.
When I switched to SW, I couldn't even give them away. I ended up partially dismantling them and used them as shallow frag tanks. Amazingly, I had people lined up to buy them for what I paid for them years earlier.

I was thinking maybe to actually go with the Aqueon 45 gallon setup from Petsmart. It's really nice looking, and super cheap. It's only 250 for everything. But.... the only bad thing is I've had a tank before that was 24 inches tall. It was really a pain. And not sure if I wanna go back to it!
A 38 gallon might be better, which is the same exact footprint just 20 inches high rather than 24. It's also pretty cheap. around 229 dollars or something like that.

Absolutely a PITA. Getting the armpit of your T-shirt wet every time you have to reach to the bottom gets old.........real fast. I was lucky to get the stand for my 40 breeder at Petco, for 12 bucks it's the metal manhattan stand or whatever they're called. it's quite sturdy.

From experience, I would never buy a 45g tank. I got one used (also had a 37g used) and the tall, narrow space is a PITA to use. Angels look good in them. But they are a royal pain to do any kind of aquascaping and there is a lot of wasted space. I had a 30g that was much easier to work with. 38g would also be a good size though I haven't had one.
The 45g I had was a SW tank, and I switched that over to a 40B (which is actually about 45g as well) - and the 40B give MUCH more space to maneuver, much more space for the fish to really utilize, and looks larger just to the eye as well. Really literally nothing ever used the top 6" or so, except during feeding time. So it was just wasted space.
Currently my mom has 2 angels (who refuse to pair) in the 45g, and it's nice enough for them but even with that it's hard to get the tall tank to look nice. You'd have to focus on tall, narrow plants to complement to tank shape.
TL;DR:
Unless you are getting angels, run away from a 45g.

Yeah, that's why I was thinking about picking up a 38 gallon tank. I really like the 36x12x20 dimensions. I'm not really worried about having as much surface space because I would just be using the tank as a low-tech shrimp tank

45 gallons, 'show' tank. This is the 1' x 2' x 3' = 45 gallons. I call it the 1-2-3-4-5 tank.
I got it from a barn where I think the silicone had aged, and for whatever reason I cannot repair it. I use it as a riparium sort of thing.
40 gallon breeder. 16" x 16". Nicest for 'scaping. The tanks that are pretty close to equal depth (horizontal distance, back to front) and height seem the easiest to work with.
46 gallon bowfront. This one is hard to 'scape. The ends are only 1' deep, and the central bow is not really large enough (side to side) to do much with.
I also have several 45 gallon tanks that are 4' long. They vary from 12" deep x 20" high to about 16" x 16". Again, the somewhat shallower (height) but deeper (back to front) tanks are easier to work with.
Tanks that are only a foot deep are tricky to get a good 3-D effect with rocks, wood and plants. Not enough room to layer these things without them looking crowded.

For me, the ADA's 90-P at 36 x 18 x 18 size is just about perfect for aquascaping. The 12O-P is not too bad either.
