20 Gallon Long Filter Choice?

959 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  flowmsp
Soo i picked up a used Sunsun 303b with uv canister a few weeks back. Its missing one or two parts but still works fine (may need a new bulb). Atm on my 20 i have 2 smaller HoB filters. On my 100 gallon i have a xp3 and fluval 305. Heres my question, should i move the sunsun onto my 100 and put the 305 on my 20? My 20 only houses some RCS and CRS/CBS. Or should i just sell the sunsun to someone else lol?

A 305 on a 20L?
Might be a bit much for Shrimp.
I can imagine them hanging on for dear life.

Would definitely have to cut the flow back.
If your wanting a canister filter, i suggest looking into a
Zoo Med 501, 511 or a Rapids Mini Canister

The zoomed and tom rapids filter are too small/weak to be used on anything bigger than a 10 gallon IME. The 305 is rated at 260gph without media in it so you'd realistically be getting more like 175-200gph with media which is not really overkill but then again I like to overfilter my tanks. Other things to consider are plant density, jet vs spraybar vs lily pipe, etc. I have 2x20 long tanks with CRS and I can safely say that I wish I bought eheim 2026 filters which have about the same flow as your 305.
zoomed 501 or equivalent are useless on anything more than 10g.
I was thinking it would be to much. I will probably sell the sunsun then and just swap to a sponge filter on my shrimp tank, really tired of HoBs.
