20 gal noises

751 Views 11 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Jadelin
I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing noises from their tank? It's sitting on a level surface, 2 sponge filters, a light, and I've been hearing 'popping' noises. Any clues and insights?
Thanks!

Hmm, that's strange. Maybe your stand is shifting due to the weight.
I initially had it on the stand for a few months, then decided to break it down and go to a smaller tank. Then a few months ago I decided to have 2 tanks. So i re-set up the tank on a shelf. Started to hear popping noises, for a few days (thought maybe the shelf isn't strong enough). Moved the tank back to the stand and now popping noises are intermittent. Water level in the tank is...level. no cracks or leaks. Just strange popping noises. The stand is actually a rather large endtable/nightstand (weighs like 60+lbs of metal and wood). I just don't to wake up to a cracked side and 20 gals of water all over the carpet and all my RCS's dead! =(
I assume there's no fauna in the tank that could be making the noises? Some fish do make noises . . .
I've never heard of plants making noise, but there is elodea, some anubias nana, HM, rotala, rotundfolia, and Hygrophila. Other than that there are 2 cory cats, 7 otos, and just RCS. The odd thing is that it's intermittent. I woke up to it this morning (4am!) and again as I'm typing this. It's not happened before...so ?!?!?!?

@reybie - Not that I know of. If it were, I can at least explain it away...

@jadelin - How's the weather in Seattle? I miss living up there!
Ooooh if your cory cats are like mine, they surface for air (fast)! They makes popping noises when they do that (break water surface). Any signs of water splatter marks in the area.
I'd first suspect the corys, then the house shifting.

Oh, are you a Washington transplant? My parents moved to California and they miss Seattle too. :icon_neut

Currently it's sort of grey and colder, although the sun's been out a couple times today. Saturday had really nice weather for this time of year though. :)
This year really has been kind of weird weather-wise; been kind of a cool summer.
I was stationed in Puget Sound for a few years. I'm actually back home now in L.A. The sun is great an all, but I miss the grey and cold. My theory is that if it's cold you can ALWAYS put more on...if it's hot, you can only take so much off. I rather a cool summer than the summer of 2006 and 2007. It was FREAKISHLY hot! Also seeing the green trees year round, fall, snow, and Crystal/Steven's Pass/Snoqualmie were not bad perks! Oh and all those coffee shops!
I think I may have found out what the problem was. The heater (aqueon 200Watt) I started to hear the noise, turned around and the heater was running. So, I'm going to test it out: swapped heaters, let it run for a week, and wait to hear any more popping sounds.

I couldn't agree with you more about the benefits of living here. :) Although the snow is pretty rare, unless you go to mountains. (Some people would call that a good thing too, though . . .) Looks like we might be in for some good fall colors this year, as it hasn't rained too much . . . :)
