While I love my 66 gallon panda cory forest I have missed having a small tank on my desk - I like potted plants but they just aren't the same. So a few days ago I went and bought a 2.6 gallon (10 liter) Dennerle NanoCube.

I don't like the rounded edges but thankfully only two are curved, the other two are straight so essentially I used the tank "the wrong way around". For substrate I went with JBL Manado, found a nice piece of spiderwood, got a crypt on lava rock, a handful of frogbit and raided the large tank for a few bits of anubias and some narrow leaf java fern. The light is a desk lamp with 9W 3000k LED.

This is what it looked like right after setup:

Aaaand... a day later I changed the substrate because the Manado just wouldn't stop floating! Every time I even looked at the tank random bits went flying - what would happen with a filter? Sigh... So I went with what I've used before, a nice small brown-grey toned gravel. I also added some grey rocks I picked from a local beach. Now it looked like this:

Finally today I added a small hob filter (with some coarse black sponge). Right now it only houses three small ramshorn snails; I'm not sure if I'll add anything else or just leave it as is. For ferts I'll be using Tropica Specialised and occasionally extra potassium and magnesium. And here we are:

Changed some things yesterday. Removed the filter because it was oddly noisy and kept vibrating the whole table. Added a few more plants (dwarf hairgrass and vallisneria nana). And switched the lightbulb from 3000K to 4000K.

And today my plants are pearling.

Ummmwat?
