I have often wondered why there seem to be no maunufacturers with stock production tanks having a 24" wide X 18" deep footprint, which would be a great shape for ripariums, and other kinds of planted setups. I have tried to put together riparium plantings in tanks 24" wide and 12" deep, such as the Aqueon 20 High, 25 High and 30 X-high, but they just have too little space front-to-back to make a display with very good depth.

I can't understand why they aren't more popular, but Great Lakes Aquariums builds several plastic-frame aquariums with the 24" X 18" footprint. I finally ran into their site a little while back. Here are descriptions of their three offerings, quoted from their list:

  • 23 GAL. 24 1/8" 17 3/4" 12 1/2" $49.95 Generally Stocked Call for Availability N/A/$
  • 34 GAL. 24 1/8" 17 3/4" 18 1/2" $64.95 Generally Stocked Call for Availability High Volume/$135
  • 45 HIGH 24 1/8" 17 3/4" 24 1/2" $79.95 Generally Stocked Call for Availability High Volume/$135
I am pretty stoked about this and I really want to get a hold of one of these. Unfortunately, they only deliver to within a certain radius of their plant near Detroit, MI. I might have to make a trip over there to pick up two or three of the 34-gallon or 45-gallon tanks.
