Day 8
0 ammo
0 nitrite
0 nitrate
Triple tested, test kit does not expire until 2024, tested my 40b- 0 ammo, 0 nitrite 10 nitrate (just dosed ferts after water change). No water change tonight, dosed with plant elixir. Definitive growth on the plants. I'm pretty sure I'm cycled. I'll be picking up a single nerite tomorrow to test.

Plopped a small nerite snail in, it's moseying around on the rock I put it on so it would seem things are well. 0 ammo, 0 nitrite, didn't test nitrates right now but will before my water change later. Will be monitoring the snail for the next couple of hours. Fingers crossed

Snail moved to 40b, started burrowing in the substrate and would not stay open on surfaces. Not quite cycled yet. I'll give it a week and try again.

Day 9
Ammo 0 (I'm pretty sure)
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
50% water change completed. Testing done before water change.

So I suspect I did not rinse and dry my test tubes properly from testing my 40b earlier. The bottom half of the water in my ammonia test tube was bright 0 ammonia color, the top half was the color blue of 0 nitrite 😅 I suspect the nerite from earlier was not, in fact, burrowing but just skimming the substrate and was upset with me handling it. I will still wait for a few more days of 0 readings before I try again. It's been happily grazing the substrate of my other tank, will not go onto the glass or decorations, though, kind of odd.
Added plant elixir. Took the top off as the condensation has crept back in.

Day 10
Ph- 6.0
Ammo 0- .25
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 0
Phos- 0
Iron- 0

Added plant elixir and leaf zone. I'm wondering probably going to start increasing the doses as I've noticed a little yellowing on the new growth. No algae yet. Plants are definitely growing. There's plenty of biofilm. Still waiting for the diatoms.

Day 11
Ammo- 0-.25
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 0

Diatoms started under the wood and around some melting on the hydrocotyle tripartita. Added the nerite again. Used some stability just in case, I have the feeling the ammonia reading is just from me not taking care of my test tubes as I have had this issue before when I've needed new test tubes. Luckily I can get them from the ag center on Monday. It's about time, I've been using the same ones for 5 years now 😅 the caps barely stay on anymore. Nerite's been cruising around on the substrate, almost did a full lap so far 😂 my hubby called me crazy for watching "snail races". I don't care, I'm amused.

Happy little nerite. Once again I've named a snail Gary.... I have 3 nerite snails named Gary now... This Gary is little. This little Gary is all brown. I like Gary. I think I need more sleep.

Day 12

Ammo- 0-.25 according to API fresh water master test kit, 0 according to pond test strips
Nitrite- 0 on both
Nitrate- 0 on both
PH- 6 (API) 5.8 (pond strips)
GH- 3 (pond strip)

Found some pond strips in my basement, they expire in 2022 so I figured I'd check my master test kits ammonia reading and it seems like it's reading wrong. I'm getting new test tubes tomorrow and I'm pretty sure that will take care of my problem. I'm surprised my GH is at 3, but hey, I'll take it.

Day 13
Ammo- .25
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 0
PH- 6.0
GH- 3

Not adding ferts as I'm getting diatoms and adding Gary prematurely was enough to add a little ammonia to my system but he (or she) is definitely taking care of business as far as melting plants and excessive biofilm. He (or she) is pooping everywhere lol. Added some stability. Plants are growing pretty well. I had to push a couple runners down on the hair grass, the s repens is starting to grow more shoots (here I was thinking they were slow growing), the l inclinata 'crystal' is now up to the heater and a couple patches of h tripartita 'japan' are filling in nicely.

In an earlier post you had a picture with a cup of Utricularia graminifolia.
You do not have that listed on your plants list. Did you not use it?
I mainly noticed this because I grow carnivorous plants. I use to grow this plant terrestrial and know many people use it in their tanks. I'll probably try to get some for my tank.

Lol, I'm growing it in a tupperware currently and still up in the air on whether or not to use it.

Ammo- 0- .25

Added some water lettuce, lighting angle was terrible in today's pic, but whatever. I know the floaters looks weird from this angle but

Day 15 water change day
Ammo- .25
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 0

Pesky ammonia. Using stability to help with it. I added Gary too soon, but oh well, he's still happy. The heater is still in there, but it's been unplugged for a day and a half, water temp holds pretty steady at 70°.

Figured I'd throw in a wider view of the tank this time cuz the water lettuce looks cool.

My plants started pearling tonight. That's the best I could do for a pic. It's not a lot but it's something 😁

Day 16
Didn't test water, did 60% change. Gary climbed out of the water- parameters were obviously off to me and I don't need to waste my time testing. Removed dead plant matter added stability, Gary returned to the water. 60% water change later Gary is cruising around munching on biofilm, algae and the remaining plant matter I couldn't get to.

I started a mini cycle. I'll be doing daily changes for the weekly and probably only testing if things seem to have stabilized. Plants are still growing great, the die off was from shocking the water lettuce with parameter changes, it shed a bunch of roots but kept the thicker roots and the roots closest to the leaves. The water lettuce in the bathroom didn't shed as much. I've been doing gallon changes with water from my goldfish tank which is a neutral tank fingers still crossed.

The L inclinata 'crystal' has started showing some orangish coloration on the top leaves of a couple plants and it's really pretty

And there's Gary munching away.

Day 17
Ammo- .25-.5
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 0

Tested before 60% water change. Gary was hiding in the substrate all day. Pulled him out of the substrate and put him on the wood. He's alive and crawling around. Scared me for a little bit, but I think he was just eating some of the dead hair grass.

Surprised I don't have nitrites or nitrites showing up, but, meh, whatever. I'll keep doing water changes until everything is back in line. I swear, s repens is way faster growing than they say it is. It's almost easy enough growing that I'm tempted to use it in my 40.

H tripartita 'japan' with single pearl, there's another one with a single pearl in the background. First day for this.
