I had posted this in the fish forum but thought I'd try it here since its nano specific....

My moderately planted 10g is ready for fish. It has a small population of snails already that are doing alright. (I don't mind snails.) I'm going to use a single or pair of Dwarf Gouramis as the centerpiece fish along with a small school of C. Pygmaeus or C. habrosus or C. hastatus but I would like suggestions on small schooling fish that might go well with the set up I am planning. In the fish forum both Mosquito and Espe Rasboras have been suggested. I'd like to hear some other suggestions as well.

Also, my original intent was a male and female for a centerpiece pair but female gouramis are exceedingly difficult to come by locally. So I would entertain suggestions for other centerpiece couples. Just not a Betta. I already have a Betta in my picotope. :)

Dwarf rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) would make nice center piece fish for your tank.
These have been a favorite for awhile. I thought they required a larger tank though.

one may be ok for a 10 gallon, but if you want to make settings more natural or favorable for them, then they would like a bigger tank and to be in a school.

I like the green neon idea. i support green neons in 10 gallons lol.

cardinal tetras are bigger than neons, maxing out at about 2" so they would work in a 10 gal for a long time. green neons are smaller than regular neons, getting close to 1" so they would be the better choice imo.

maybe this site can help getting male and female dwarf gouramies:
http://www.aquariumfish.net/catalog_pages/gouramis/gouramis.htm

though I'd still be wary some of the females pictured look like different color variations of male dwarf gourami. but then again maybe not! you'll have to try this to find out.

I started journals for this tank and my Marina Cubus. The links are in my signature. I'm going to do the school of Corydoras for the sand "lake", some shrimp for the "land animals" and instead of a focal fish or pair, I'm going to do a schooling open water fish to act as a sort of flock of birds. There have been some wonderful suggestions already. I'm
also looking through various sites online. Decisions, decisions, decisions!
