Hello, I'm in the process of planning out a new AIO 30g cube and was hoping to get some guidance on substrate options. This will be a moderately planted and stocked no CO2/high light tank. I plan on doing a dry start for foreground plants and moss. For plants, they're all TBD, esp the...

The Father Fish Method (https://bit.ly/37rO43V), a variation of the Walstad Method, is claimed to create permanently nutritious substrate while the Walstad Method only lasts a few years and requires root tabs thereafter to maintain. A guy I met at my LFS, who has been doing Walstad for over 30...

Hi all, I got a new aquarium bowl for Christmas and wanted to try using soil for this one. I watched a lot of "Foo the Flowerhorn's" videos and am using this as a starting point. I'm going to use miracle grow organic choice potting mix (filtering out large pieces). My question is what to use...

I have an established 20 gallon long - been running with current stock for probably 5+ years now. I don't want to replace the whole substrate, but I was thinking of adding an area of controsoil behind a driftwood 'retaining wall' to have a few sword plants. I know that controsoil is supposed...
  5. General Planted Tank Discussion
Hi, I’m starting my first planted tank with Controsoil. My question has to do with the Nitrogen cycle. Controsoil says it has low ammonia release. I have tested at 1ppm for the last three days and have been dosing seachem stability as per the instruction on the bottle. Is the 1ppm ammonia leach...

I found amazon is not currently selling Controsoil as the had in the past. They now only have it from external sellers at $150+ per bag! I haven't found it available anywhere else and the website Controsoil doesn't appear to be functional. Was controsoil discontinued?

12/5/15 Any ideas for a name? I'm terrible at naming things, tanks included. This is definitely my best tank so far, so if any of them have deserved a name so far, it's this one. Current plant list: Ludwigia repens "red" Cabomba caroliniana Staurogyne repens (it has rooted very well but...

I will be setting up a 20 gallon long tank tonight for my crystal red shrimp. I purchased Controsoil and I'm very eager to use it. However, I planned on using Borneowild Humic in the substrate for plant growth and optimal parameters for my shrimp. Controsoil is supposed to maintain a pH in...

Hey All, Friday I broke down (2) 20G tanks and set up a new 45G rimless tank. The substrate from the established tanks was UP Shrimp Sand and over a year old, so I started the 45 with a new bag of Controsoil and seeded it underneath with a couple very thin layers of the established Shrimp Sand...

A great alternative to all the advice out there is to buy some Controsoil and use DIY root tabs. Preferably Osmocote Plus or dynamite Plant food. For a beginner wanting to do a low tech tank no other method is easier or as efficient. It makes the hobby easier and is very simple. Set it and...
