Getting back into the hobby after a 5 year hiatus with a bang!
Like all great decisions, I impulse bought this 40g breeder at the Petco $/gal sale. I had a low-tech tank back when I was a much more poor student but, with more space in my house and (this time) access to a car, I figured I’d go...
Today I'm hoping to get some of the more experienced hobbyists to take a look at my tank/lights/plants/ferts and throw me some general advice or tips.
Namely, I'm trying to figure out if my lighting will allow for certain plants.
Setup: Been running steady for about 6 months
I'm setting up a small breeding and grow out rack and would like some advice/thoughts on using a fluval 406 as the return pump.
The rack will be 4x 20 longs above with a 40 breeder sump. The 406 will sit just below the 40B - so water will siphon into it. The 20 longs will be above the canister...
HEY TPT USERS!
Ive had plants in some of my previous tanks but never kept a fully planted aquarium. Recently have decided I love this look and cant wait to setup my 40 breeder into an awesome community tank.
Im in the planning stages now with the beginning of the build starting mid august...

Hey everyone, I have a 40 breeder that has been set up for about a year and a half (although I moved about 9 months ago). It is pretty well planted, although I probably wouldn't call it 'dense'. It has various anubias, various crypts, Java moss, Java fern, temple plant, and a stemmed plant that...
I moved recently, and it was apparent that I would not be able to keep my five tanks running (two display, one quarantine, one for breeding, one for shrimp). So I decided to combine my two display tanks (10 and 15 gallons into a single 40 breeder and repurpose the 15 gallon as a shrimp tank.
My first journal! I call this scape Octopus. The scape is about 8 weeks young. The Manzanita branches look like a reaching Octopus. The center of the round arch on the left is pretty close to the vertex of the Golden Ratio. The overall scape follows the shell pattern from right to left. The...
This is the story of my first planted tank and the wild adventure that ensued.
Tank Shot as of: 8/16/13
40 gallon breeder
Hydor 200w in-line
Finnex Fugeray 36"
Black Diamond 20/40 blasting grit with Pfertz root tabs

My 40B is almost done cycling which means I can start thinking about purchasing fish, yay!
My tank parameters:
Eheim 2217 w/ in-line Hydor heater
pH: 8.0 (I understand this could change yet)
Temp: 78 F (can be adjusted as necessary, obviously)
My proposed stocking...
The time has come for me to let this go. I've had the setup for about 6 months now, though it was used when I got it. For the most part, it's pretty solid, though I would highly recommend resealing the tank. There is a pinhole leak a few inches from the top frame, and while I've done a patch job...
I recently upgraded to a 16" high 40 breeder for my two goldfish, from a 28 gallon 18" high. On the old tank I had an AH supply 55W 24" fixture. I've never dosed CO2, but I run a planted refugium on reverse cycle and I've always thought that maybe the two tanks dose eachother with CO2...
TO SEE HIGH QUALITY PICS, I RECOMMEND YOU GO TO THE LAST PAGE AND WORK BACKWARDS :proud:
Hey everybody :D Well I had a saltwater tank for 2 years but decided it was just too much work to actually enjoy. I was then left with an algae encrusted eclipse 12 tank with minimal plants and minimal...
