Date Started

1960 with one 8 gallon tank, l made wooden tanks until glass was invented.

Lighting

Shop lights, with a few real hoods here and there. Running 14-16 hrs a day.

Equipment

Koi pond has its own system of filters. Breeding and fry Aquariums rely on "bucket gravel filters", other tanks have deep gravel and undergravel filters. 20% water changes each week, more if tank is crowded. Very cheap, simple set up, but very effective.

CO2

None

Substrate

Bare tanks for fry and breeding, most larger tanks are using undergravel filters and gravel, deeper than normal. Plants love the gravel in older tanks.

Parameters

PH tends to be 7.6 to 7.8 No ammonia, nitrates or nitrites due to frequent partial water changes and well cycled tanks with light fish load.

Fertilization

None, except for well aged tanks. A new tank will not keep plants alive for a while, after the tank ages and fertilizer accumulates, plants will thrive.

Plants

Rooted plants in large tanks include Jungle val, dwarf amazon swords, water sprite, several crypts, saggiteria, anacharis, java moss, riccia.
Floating and lose plants in fry and breeder tanks include , anacharis, guppy grass, java moss, Java fern, bolbitis fern, water lettuce, riccia.

Inhabitants

Breeding angels, marmalade cats, bristle nosed plecos, Ameca Splendens, Alfaro Cultratus, Limia nigrofasciata, Ilyodon Furcidens, Mystery snails, asolene spixi snails and assasin snails. Plus a community tank of other peoples cast offs. A few other africans. A few marmorkrebs to keep unwanted snails down and provide food.

Comments

I keep simple tanks. Not crowded. Undergravel filters are cleaned with a huge power head attached to a drain hose. I suck the undergravel filters clean every coulple of months with the big pump. I don't disturb the gravel otherwise and plants love it. Tanks stay clean and it is easy to maintain.
