20L Inline Heater

Will a 200w heater be ok for 20 gallons? I want to use an inline heater with my canister but in my searching I saw a few say that when it comes to heaters there is such a thing as having to much. Also on BigAls site it says the 200w is only recommended for 25-50 gallons.

What say you Planted Tank??

I like my inline heater

I've had the 200 watt hydor inline heater on my 20 gallon long for over a year without any problems.

The only time you would worry about having too much heater for your aquarium is if it wasn't adjustable, but most new heaters are. You would also worry about size if your heater fails and just begins to constantly heat the water, but I think at that point any sized heater will harm/kill your fish.

On the Hydor you set the temperature on the heater and it only turns on when the tank temperature drops below the set temp. It does make a pretty annoying "click" noise when it turns on and off though, but mine doesn't turn on very often because I have the temp of my tank set pretty close to my room temp and my lights heat my water fairly well.

Or if you're really worried about the wattage/size you could go for an undergravel heater, which I've seen as low as 50 watts, but then you have the cords running into your tank as well as having to pull up your substrate to install it.

Over all I really like my inline heater because it keeps the heater out of my tank and my tank looks so much nicer because of it. I'd say go for it.

I run a 200w on my 65g and never had any problems.

I have a 200W Hydor on my 60P (roughly 18 gallons) which might be overkill, but it was the smallest inline heater I could use. Didn't want the clutter of a traditional heater in the tank. You should be more than fine with it on a 20L.
