Fluval & AquaClear HOB Impeller

Hi All,

I have a few of the Fluval C2, C3 & 4 filters, AquaClear 70 and occasionally have reason to replace the impellers.

It seems to me that I could take the smallest C2 impeller which is the cheapest and easily powers all of these filters without really noticing much loss in filtration flow?. They all use the same Hagen Motor Unit, AquaClear 20/30/50/70/Mini/150/200/300 motor.

Looking at these impellers:

C2
Fits Fluval C2 Power Filter
This product weighs 0.04-pound
Measures 8/9-inch length by 3-8/9-inch height by 2-1/2-inch width

C3
Hose clamp is specifically designed for non-kink hosing to provide maximum torque and sealing efficiency
Fits Fluval C3 Power Filter
This product weighs 0.04-pound
Measures 8/9-inch length by 3-8/9-inch height by 2-8/9-inch width

C4
Fits Fluval C4 Power Filter
This product weighs 0.042-pound
Measures 1-inch length by 3-8/9-inch height by 2-1/2-inch width
Age range description: All Life Stages

I'd say with very minimal loss the C2 or C3 impeller would be just fine for any of these filters? Anyone else draw the same conclusion? It's certainly cheaper to just use the C2 impeller.

The only thing you can't do is use the C4 impeller in the C2 or C3 filters as it would throw too much water and the smaller C2&C3 wouldn't be able to contain the little added flow so you'd have bit of a leak.

I've ordered the C2 impeller for a few bucks less and am going to see why I can't use it and if I really notice a difference in my smaller tanks. I've got about 10 smaller tanks running and it's nice to have extra motors and parts when one goes out, which seems to happen every so often. In some tanks, I've been lucky and will get a solid year out of an impeller or maybe a bit longer.

As always, I appreciate comments, etc.,

I put a C3 impeller in my C4 and it lowered the flow by a good bit , that was what I was going for . I would think the C2 would be an even more drastic reduction . I got the C3 impeller from Amazon for like $12 . let us know what you do and how it turns out .

My wife says if I get one more aquarium she is going to leave me . I sure am going to miss her fried chicken .

Well... so far as I can tell, saving a few bucks and using the smaller C2 impeller works just fine in all of the Fluval Cseries and AquaClear HoB filters up to 70GPH . So you save a few bucks and if you're like me and you've got 6-10 running at any given time it's worth mentioning. I like to make sure that I always have two spares.
