Can Clay balls used for hydroponics/aquaponics or pumice or both can be used in a canister filter?

I can't say about the clay, but I use 3/8" graded pumice in several of my canisters.

I use Hydroton clay balls in both a sump and a canister filter, however mixed with Matrix and poret foam. I'm giving the bacteria a choice.
