Prefilter + esternal canister filter

I have the Eheim 2271 (EHEIM Professionel 4+ 250) with the Eheim Prefilter attached on the intake.
Now I was looking for some replacement sponges (my anxiety says you should always be stocked up with spare parts/consumables, don't ask ) and this one website said that if you pair up the Eheim prefilter with an external filter you can remove the mechanical filter media and fill the entire external filter with bio media.
Any thoughts on this? I'd like to do that and decrease the number of external filter cleanings.
Is the Eheim Prefilter shrimp safe or should I put something over it?

I do this with my Fluval and SunSun. The Fluval has a large sponge on the intake and it keeps a lot of crap suspended in the filter. It does not prevent buildup in the canister, I still have to take it out and do a good rinse at least a couple times a year.

The Sunsun has a dedicated inline prefilter on it and it does a much better job of keeping the main canister clean. Even after a year or so, when I took the canister apart to inspect it, it was as clean as the day I put the prefilter in place. The fine part clogs pretty quickly, so you end up cleaning it often, usually once a week for me, but it's still much easier to clean the prefilter out than the canister. The Sunsun prefilter even comes with valves for both lines so you can close them prior to disconnecting them.
