Do I need activated carbon ??

Hi Everyone,

Should I remove my activated carbon in my filter ?

I have a high tech dense planted tank (Fluval Flex 15).

Thank you,

I would, and swap it for more sponges / filter floss. This way you have more "trapping" ability to remove plant mass that makes its way into the filter.

I haven’t used activated carbon in ages. Unless cleaning out medication. But regularly, no. Sponges and bio media took its place

It can remove certain micro nutrients especially when its fresh. In a high light tank full of plants you will probably have better results without it.

Keep some on hand just in case, but don't use it on the regular. Good for removing meds or toxins from the tank but otherwise just a waste of money. If anything...Purigen is great for removing excess organics and my understanding is that it doesn't remove any ferts that you add to the water. Best thing is, you can recharge it so you don't have to constantly spend money replacing it.

For me carbon is very useful at startup i agree once the tank gets going and especially if your heavily planted you don't need it. I've started up every tank in the last 10 years with activated carbon. At startup there is little in the way of a biofilter both in term of media and plants so the carbon removes organics which would otherwise lead to potential algae problems.
