heater positioning

I notice that many pictures I see of tanks have a heater at an angle in them. Is there a reason for this?

It might be because the tank, decor placement or substrate height is shorter than the length of the heater.

The heater is more efficient when placed horizontally rather than vertically.

For example, I was using a 50 watt heater on my 20 gallon tank and at first I placed it vertically.

It is one of those cheapies that are set at 78 degrees and not adjustable (which i did not realize when ordering), and it could not keep the tank above 72 degrees.

After repositioning it horizontally my tank is now steady at 77 degrees.

Another reason people place heaters at an angle or horizontal is it makes them last longer as the heat is not traveling up the base of the heater and heating the actual heater versus water.

Poorly worded but I hope my point is understood
