Sponge filter placement

I am going to add a small sponge filter to my 10 gallon tank. I would like to hide it as much as possible. I have a huge clump of hornwort in the back, and I was thinking of clearing a space in this clump and putting the sponge filter there. Some of the hornwort would inevitably be touching the sponge. Will this make the sponge filter ineffective? Is it bad that the bubbles would be hitting plants on the way up?
