I thought I had seen an amazing summary of pros and cons for different types of filters but I've searched and can't find it. Anyone know how to find it in archives?

I have a 30 gallon with a HOB filter that is nearing failure. We use Siporax filter medium and filter floss currently. No charcoal or anything else. Our tank is heavily planted so the plants seem to do most of the work for water quality. I have Fluorite black sand so I only lightly vacuum the gravel once every 2 months with a 1/3 water change out.

I'm looking for reccomendations. 🙂

Edit: forgot to say, I'm in the USA so US power outlets. 🙂

What features you looking for? Filter floss pad with bio? Or like stacked multi stage filter?

To me a HOB has many potential issues. Power outages can cause some of them to drain their tubes too much if the water level is too low. Preventing them from starting right back up, others have leak issues if the motor pump uses a O ring over time. Marineland filters have no potential for leaking due to their design, but they have issues with their tube draining during power outages causing the above issue with startups. Which can be fixed if one cares enough. I think some bigger models may not have this issue.

Some filters have high failure rates of their pumps, due to poorly insulated wire being used in the magnetic coil or too thin wire overheating. Which reviews will mention.

Also google has a way to scan a website.

I've only use HOB before so I'm still learning about canister filters. The canister would need to be on the same level as the tank (behind/beside it) and I want it quiet (water noise is ok but my current one just started rattling).

I was referring to normal HOB filters. Some use a vertical pad, others use like stacked stages.

Also you can get replacement impellers for some filters. They fail due to two reasons, sometimes the shaft rusts and eats into the impeller rapidly, mostly a saltwater issue, other times the impeller just wears out...

See my two photos of the pad vs stacked type.
