Safe concealed tank equipment?

The biggest tank I've had so far is a Fluval 5 gallon, but I'm looking to upgrade to some bigger sizes, like 10 and 20. The advantage with Fluval is slots in the divider plate so that no fish or plants get sucked in, and the equipment, including the heater, can be hidden.

What do people generally use for bigger tanks, that won't be a danger to small fish like endlers? And how do you hide all this but still make it accessible? I have an industrial shelf I'd like to put these tanks on but it would be hard to access the backs and far sides.

get out of my house
