Custom Filter Troubles!

I attempted to design an intake for my Penn Plax Cascade that would work as both a surface skimmer and a regular intake simultaneously. I grabbed some PVC and cut long thin triangle slits around the top to make a typical surface skimmer, then attached a Tee to the bottom of the pipe. I then put some mesh on the inside of the Tee as a safety precaution for the fish. I tested it and it worked perfectly on an empty tank, but once I put substrate in and planted it, there was enough debris that the bottom intake was almost immediately clogged. The big problem with this is that the surface skimmer can't keep up with the filter without the lower intake as well. So when it tries to run without the bottom intake it takes in massive amounts of air and is extremely noisy in the process. This bottom intake is extremely hard to clean and at this point, I can't think of a design that would just WORK. Anybody wanna take a crack at it? (Later when I have time I will attach pictures of the whole setup)

I'm not sure how to engineer this, but putting the prefilter upstream of both the regular intake and the skimmer would solve your issue.

You could try to put one of these over the intake and use a rubber band to secure if need . I use these for prefilters on all my filters. Home Depot used to sell them , but I couldn't find them today . These are the same ones at the same price point......

My wife says if I get one more aquarium she is going to leave me . I sure am going to miss her fried chicken .
