Can you run a UV filter with the inlet and outlet pointing up?

Hi

I have an Odyssea UV filter. Can it be used with the inlet and outlet pointed up? I'm trying to keep the plumbing as straight and direct as possible as I'll be hooking it up to a small powerhead. That will only require 1 tubing adapter if I have this figured out correctly. I tried to connect it to my 2211 Eheim but with the small diameter hose that it uses on the outlet, I had too many connectors and it leaked like a sieve.

Related question. Will 5/8 vinyl tubing fit onto regular schedule 40 1/2" PVC pipe (not CPVC) It works with the CPVC but I need the extra girth of the regular PVC pipe.
