75 gallon filtration

Hi All,

I am going to be doing a lightly planted 75 g - plan on doing discus.

I currently have an aquaclear 110 which looks like it would suffice, I just hate the tank is so far from the wall with it on the back. . Was thinking of going with a canister filter -

Been a while since i set up a tank and my last tank was a reef with a sump, and the tank was basically flush with the wall which was awesome.

question is - does a canister need to be as far from the wall as the HOB? Im guessing not?

If so, Id probably just stick with the AC110. so next question - should that be enough to cover a 75 gallon tank?? or should I be think of adding a secondary filter - OR replacing all and going with one big cannister - was look at Fluval FX4 or saving some money and going with the Marineland 360.

ANy recommendations appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I would go with the fx4 since it has more gph, and if you ever want to get a lot of fish you can be on the safe side with an over filtered tank. A canister filter doesnít require that much space behind the tank and it would look better than having a hob.

With my canister filter on a 75g tank, I need about 1.5 to 2" clearance behind the tank for equipment.

It depends on how many discus and what other fish plan on keeping with them.

An Aquaclear 110 would be fine for a group of 6 adult discus because, with them, you will be doing large weekly water changes.
If adults (5.5 inches +) at least 1-2 50% water changes weekly are needed. I do a 75% water change with mine 2x weekly.

With juveniles ( 2-4 inch) or sub-adults ( 4-5 inch) you will need to do more frequent water changes.

180 g. low tech w/ wild South American cichlids, corydoras eques, and African Congo riverine tetras.
60 g. low tech w/ F1 Alenquer pair /Stendker "Tefe" discus and wild Altum Angels
30 g. low tech w/ Wild Tucano tetras
30 g. low-tech African Biotope

I was planning about 6 discus, maybe a small group of tetras of some sort. Still researching this and not 100% decided on discus yet.

Do you guys think the fx4 would be too much for this tank??

The FX4 would not be too much for the tank. I have two FX 6's on a 180. So, generally I over-filter all my aquariums.

Thanks!

Any other filters that i should be looking at that are competing with the fx4?

How much of a deal? I wish I bought one before I got my Eheim pro4 since they were about 180 during Black Friday I believe.

I paid $200. I thought it was good price.. I may have done a little better on ebay - but I worry that some of these sellers are not authorized dealers and warranty may not be honored..

I have an fx4 on a 135 and it does great but, I also have an eheim on a 20 long and cant say enough about that one either. I would stay away from the cheaper filters like sun sun and marine land especially keeping discus. I am a huge believer of over filtering, so if you keep the aquaclear, great filters, i would get another and put at the opposite side of the tank. But my opinion get the Fx4.
