White slime on pH probe?

Hi everyone,

I did an quick search and couldnít find a similar thread. My brand new pH controller probe has built up this white, mucus-like, layer over the bulbous probe end.

Iíve been in the hobby for nearly 30 years, and Iíve never seen anything like it. Itís not like the stuff that grows on driftwood - thatís more fuzzy. This is like a mucus-like skin that can be peeled off.

Anyone else with these units experience this and/or know what causes it? Iím concerned about it affecting the probes ability to accurately read and control the ph.

Regards,

Cento

Are you, on an off chance, using DIY CO2 (with yeast?)

The slime you described tends to happen with yeast-based DIY CO2.

Nope. Itís a paintball setup hooked up to a dual stage regulator with a run-of-the-mill ceramic diffuser.

The tank is over 3 years old (though itís been rescaped twice) and has a huge fluval g6 filter running. Fluval plant 3.0 (turned down to about 50%). Tank is a 12 gallon long.
