Canister filter

Hello Everyone,

fluval 106 or 206, penn plax cascade 700 or 1000, or marineland magnflow 160 or 220? eheim is just too expensive for me right now. It is for my 40 gallon breeder. Would keep aqueon quietflow 30 HOB on tank as well. Thanks for advice!

Of those I'd go with 206. 106 is too small for a 40. You could make it work with the HOB but media-wise you lose a third basket vs the 206.

The Cascade works OK (have both) and I don't hate it but it's just not as good as the Fluval. Less expensive and would give you a little higher flow but the Fluval filters much better, much more quiet, and set up better. Worth the difference in price even losing some GPH I think.

I've not used the Marineland so can't comment on that one.

For the same price as a Fluval 206, I'd go with the hydor 250. I have the hydor 350 and it's very quiet and has normal tubing. I really dislike my Fluval 306. It's loud and has the ribbed tubing which collects a lot of detritus. I also prefer maintenance on the Hydor.

Ah. I'd get the filter at Kensfish.com
They've got cheaper prices for some of the filters.

Get yourself a Eheim 2215 $119 at Big Al's same price as a Fluval 206 and it's a 90 gallon filter instead of a 45.

I wouldn't put anything smaller than a Eheim 2217 ( Big Al's $169) on a 40 breeder though, but with a power head you should be fine.

Thanks for all of your input! I ended up getting a Marineland Magniflow 220 as I had a gift card to Petco from Christmas. It's normally 149.99 and was on sale for 89.99! Used entire gift card on it, but totally worth it not paying for a canister filter!!

In the future should I get a bigger tank or another 40g breeder, I'll definitely look into the suggested brands. I'll have to save up for an Eheim. Thanks again!!
