4dKh solution help.

OK what gives!!

I used a couple recipes online and I end up with 5dKh.

I used distilled water.
I have the API test kit, i have to add 5 drops to get it back to yellow.
AND when add the API Ph test solution I have to add about 6 drops and then it turn DARK green not blue.

I rinsed my bottles with tap water and my water is fairly hard, could the rinsing be enough to through it off a full degree? I doubt it myself, but what is causing this!

I did it twice with the same results! Come on I gots me 6 grade edumacation...it shouldn't be that hard!

The first thing I'd check is the pH test solution. It may be bad. If you truly made a 5 dkh solution, you should have a result of it being blue, not dark green.

I generally only add the pH solution when I'm actually filling my drop checker. I only need 1 drop, but that's a very small amount of water.

BTW, it's generally useless to test pure distilled water. With nothing in it, the pH reading from a test kit or even a pH meter tends to be all over the place.

HI Dave,
I added the Ph reagent to the water in the drop checker when I was ready to set it up. That's where it turned green. Now here is the interesting part...this morning the drop checker is blue as can be!
Maybe it just needed to sit awhile?
I don't have any fish in the tank so I'm cranking the CO2 today to see what it does.
Ya, testing distilled water does not give good results.

Hi, Dark,
I used this recipe the second time and that is what is currently in the dropper

Odd, your recipe is correct. I assume you used a scale to measure out all your quantities? When making the stock solution, it is very important to get everything accurate.

Also, it might be worthwhile to test your distilled water to ensure it has no carbonate hardness
