Hi everyone. A few weeks ago I posted some of my results using Salty Shrimp GH/KH+ and reported that my reconstituted water parameters, and some other people's, weren't very close to what the directions indicated.........but I was wrong!!
The directions on the container indicate mixing a batch up with a "conductance of about 300 +/- 50 microsiemens." Like a [email protected]
$$ I took that to mean 300 +/-50 TDS. For what it's worth to some of you, TDS and microsiemens aren't interchangeable. Maybe I’m the only one that didn’t already know this. However, at a very basic level of explaining, microsiemens measures the conductance of electricity in water whereas TDS is a measurement of total dissolved solids in parts per million…..some of which may conduct electricity and some may not.
At any rate, for those who care or were clueless like me, you can convert microsiemens to TDS……sort of. Without getting into complicated water chemistry, basically….If you multiply microsiemens by 0.64 or 0.7 (I’ve seen both) you can get a pretty close value of TDS. SO, the instructions would read “about 200 +/- 30 TDS”. Now knowing this, I can say that the water I made up with SS GH/KH+ is very close to the instructions, instead of not close at all and it appears to be another great SS product if those are the parameters you are looking for.
I just thought since I learned something today, I’d pass it along and maybe someone else might learn too.
