As long as it wasnt sitting directly over the heat element area it should be fine. Has it been moving since? If not, i would remove it from the tank and take a sniff. Could be dead/cooked.

I don't think inverts feel pain...at least not like we do. Probably to their advantage too with all the stuff that can happen to them in nature.

The Parliament of Canada's Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs explains the current scientific understanding that inverts do not feel pain in this abstract:

A while back I added a heater to an ivory mystery snail breeding tank. Burned the shells from them crawling next to it. From a beautiful uniform ivory color to ugly brown burned spots on it.

Well 2 days on and it's still moving around the tank. I just found it strange, it was directly on the heating element and the red light was on (signalling the heater had activated) - shouldn't it have been fried? Iv'e stick my hand on the heater just now (when it's on) and i can't hold it for anymore than a minute or so before it gets too hot to handle.
