Amazonia absorbing kH?

I had a spare tank with amazonia in it that was just sitting. I added some PFR's to it and used some backing soda to bump the kh up to 4, ph 7. All good I thought, but today I check the kh and it is back at 0. pH is at 6.6.

My assumption is that the Amazonia is äbsorbing" the kh, altering the ph, and will continue to do so until the buffering capacity is gone. Is this right? And if so, how do people who use buffering substrates, even different ones such as Azoo plant grower, maintain a stable kh reading regardless of ph?
