What's wrong with my snail

For the last 2 days my yellow snail has been floating at the top of the tank. He's done this before but it was always with the shell closed. He's floating out, I pulled him out of the water and he didn't close his trap door. No smell or anything. Is it dead or just floating in the current?

If he didn't close up, I'm inclined to say he's dead, Jim.

dang, anyway to tell what killed him? I've noticed my snails don't crawl along the substrate as much as they use to. they seem to always be on the glass/plants.

Give him a few pokes in the flesh and see if he retracts.

He might just be enjoying a float. Mine love to be on the plants and float around a bunch, too. If you pick him up and gently poke at his face and he retracts then you know he's fine. Don't use your finger unless you're ok with a smooshy mess if he's dead.

So I poked him, no movement. He wasn't dangling or anything. I closed the trap up and put him in the tank. He's currently floating with the current trap shut.

if you pull slightly on the door does he resist? He'll start really stinking if he's gone.

Guess its dead, snails retract ones you poke them. If you leave there too long it will stink and cause ammonia spikes.

My day is better whenever I buy a new plant.
