Unhappy Stupidest mistake I've ever made

One probably can't beat a fail like this, right?

The other day I was preparing some water for a water change in my Malawa/cherry tank, but I must've been high because I dosed API Algaefix instead of Top Fin conditioner... Not only was there still chlorine, but Algaefix is not supposed to be used with invertebrates, and the 1 mL dose is for 10 gallons and this is a 5 gallon tank. (The two bottles are very similar and I keep all my ferts and stuff in one bin) So this morning I spotted about 3 dead adults and at least 20 shrimplets dead.

I immediately did an 80% water change (without making the same mistake) and added some extra conditioner. Is there anything else I can do? No I do not have another tank to move them to.

Thanks in advance.

It happens, trust me. I've done worse!

If you don't already have carbon in there, get some in the tank fast.

You definitely need to get good bacteria back into your tank/filter. Chlorine wiped them out.

+1 on that.

Two good products that I have used with success:

TLC Start Smart:

https://www.tlc-products.com/pdf/AQU...stimonials.pdf

I have started using TLC now, since it is cheaper than Tetra.

And Tetra Safe Start:

From Tetra's website:
"SafeStart accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums. The live bacteria start working immediately to provide a safe and healthy environment for your fish without the long wait. Reduces ammonia and nitrite. Reduces fish loss caused from new tank cycle. Use to cycle new aquariums or replenish the good bacteria after maintenance."

Well now most of my cherry adults are dead, but I can't exactly get any bacteria products anytime soon. Since I only have a sponge filter, there's no way I can add carbon.

I will move some media from other filters and put it in on the gravel.

Added old filter media, still getting more deaths. Did 2 more 40% water changes...

Amano died, probably have about 10 malawas and 5 cherries left.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. i would have suggested taking a filter off another tank and slap it on this tank pronto... Bear in mind that erratic changes in tds and water parameters may also prove detrimental as it could evoke premature molting.

If they are still dying 3 hours after the incident, net them out completely and place them in a container of clean water with prime at the appropriate dosage.

Biological without mechanical filtration is often times a problem waiting to happen. Shrimp are just sensative intolerant creatures.

ps, it may feel awful at the moment, but dont beat yourself over it. we have all done something similar if not worse going into any hobby. This is as much a learning process as it is something that can always be improved.
