Barley question

My shrimp attack barley, but when they're done, I always get these little flecks of organic matter. They don't eat this, and I'm not sure if it negatively will impact water quality or provide food over time.

Any thoughts would be nice.

Thanks,
Mark

Not sure. I've never seen my water negatively impacted by feeding barely. I figure shrimp and snails will graze on the leftovers and what little impact it might have will be taken care of by the biofilter. I feed just a tiny bit and there's no trace by the next day.

Leftover barley should be fine to leave in the tank. The BorneoWild Barely label states that it is fine to leave uneaten portions in the tank as a water conditioner. Barley is often added to ponds to improve water quality as well.

Barley question

Thanks, guys.

I'll moderate when/how much I feed.

I usually feed barley when I'm going away for 4-6 days.

Not quite how it works, in ponds the barley floats because oxygen loving bacteria eat the barley and create hydrogen peroxide, which in turn kills algae. It used to be thought that the bacteria itself was what killed the algae.

Either way, since the barley food doesn't float, that bacteria doesn't grow on it, and there's no reason to think anything but decay occurs after that . If you feed a lot of barley and that stuff rots in the tank, just like with IAL or dead plants, there will be some phosphates and nitrates released as it decays. Just perform regular water changes.

Barley question

Thanks, Liam.

I think I'll leave it in there, especially with my floater-filters. Lol.
