Exclamation Amano shrimp hiding in pump

We have a well-established tank, heavily planted, with many tree limbs and rocks for hiding spaces. We added 3 Amano shrimp to the tank. 2 died in the first week because they kept climbing into the intake. Now the 3rd keeps "sleeping" inside the pump nozzle. How they get in is beyond me since they can't swim against the current.

Beyond putting mesh over the pump nozzle, is there anything else I can do?

Well they can swim/crawl/jump against the current just fine. They migrate back up rivers from being babies growing up in brackish water.

Generally some sort of sponge prefilter (or stainless steel mesh) on the intake. Some kind of mesh on the out take or just let them hang out in the out flow.

What kind of filter do you have?
