Trying to breed mystery snails in a low PH soft planted tank

Can it be done? I need to breed mystery snails to provide a steady food stream for my dwarf puffer. It seems like all I can get him to eat. I can't find a good supply of pond snails (LFS doesn't want to provide them, and he eats the ones that ride in on plants pretty quick)

Even when fasting for days he won't consider anything else. Doesn't even bother my amano shrimp or fish.

So since I have a 10 G devoted to raising cuttings/ extra plants to sell I figured it would be a good place to breed the snails for him. Problem is I live in NYC and have soft, slightly below neutral water. That is good for the plants, but I guess terrible fr the snail? I have crushed coral I could add.

Also, one of my snails has a broken shell at the tip (apex) where the spiral finishes. His flesh is exposed there. Should I take him back? Just got him yesterday like that, and they charged me $4 a piece. He is still very active and eating already
