Help, Random New RCS Deaths

In my established RCS tank that has been running for over half a year and been breeding like crazy, I have been having death of shrimps everyday, with today being the worst.

My water parameters are fine, PH - 6.5, GH-6. 0/0/0 N/N/A

I have noticed them several of them being very lethargic and some seem to have a new odd color shade to them. I've also noticed that some of the dead appear to look like Red Rili shrimp but when they were alive they were painted fire red? Is this some kind of disease?

I did catch one of them with mild Vorticella on his head, but this one is acting fine and looks normal RCS.

One of the deaths does appear to be molting related as it has the white line in its back.

Ive attached photos, I do not know if they'll help but any suggestions or tips will be great. I do not want to lose my entire colony!

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like either some kind of disease or not high enough mineral content. I'd put some mineral stones/balls in there and throw some medicine in there too. I personally use Seachem Paraguard.

Bump: By the way, could you tell me what substrate that is in the picture? Seems like everybody uses it but me! I feel like I missed the boat on that one! I like it though.

I don't use that substrate for shrimp at all.... and it's not always the best substrate to use if you don't know what you are doing.

@Mastacembelus are you using RO water and GH minerals? It may be a good idea to bump up the GH to 7 or 8.

What do you feed them?

Any chance of toxins harming them? This could be from cleaning chemicals, perfumes or air fresheners, etc.

@Zoidburg I do use RO water and minerals yes.

I feed them Hikari Shrimp Cuisine twice a day.

+1 on bumping up the minerals. Couldn't hurt and might help.

Underwater gardening!?! Where have you been all my life?

Hikari Shrimp Cuisine

Ingredients
Fish Meal, Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal, Cuttlefish Meal, Heat Processed Soybeans, Dried Seaweed Meal, Flaked Corn, Sodium Alginate, Brewer's Dried Yeast, Spirulina, Wheat Germ Meal, Starch, Cuttlefish Oil, Lecithin, Clam Extract, Dl-Methionine, Astaxanthin, Choline Chloride, , Vitamin E Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (Stabilized Vitamin C), Inositol, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Vitamin A Oil, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Niacin, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source Of Vitamin K), Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Biotin, Ferrous Sulfate, Magnesium Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Cobalt Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Iodate.

Algae is the 5th and 9th ingredients on the list.... I do not recommend feeding this stuff, or at least not feeding it more than once a week. I would recommend searching for food where algae/vegetables are the main ingredients, not fish. I've had great success with foods from OMGAquatics and I've also got Ken's Fish Vegetable Sticks. (there's two versions) When I kept having unexplained deaths, changing the diet was the only thing that really helped. Feed the algae/vegetable food twice a week and the animal protein food once a week.

Is this what could cause them to turn purple before dying?

I will change their diet to more diverse like many mentioned, but everyday more shrimp turn purple and pale and lethargic and then the next day are dead. It's spreading to the entire colony.

Would dosing Paraguard be a start since I am shooting in the dark here on what this is killing them.

Hard to say if Paraguard will help or not. May be recommended to start at a 1/4 or 1/2 dose and work your way up if you want to try that route.

Thank you, I will try this route then. I'm not sure what else to do to stop whatever disease/infection I have.

Could Hydras cause this? I have seen some in my tank.

Not sure.... but getting rid of them would be a start! I know they kill baby shrimp, not sure about adults. I've never dealt with them personally.

Paraguard may or may not kill them, but I know that products that kill planaria *do* kill Hydra.
