Snail ID


I purchased some snails and fish from a LFS and was told the snails were apple snails. I happily walked home with several snails that look like this:

However, after a month I notice that one of the snails does not look like the other. He looks like this:

What are these snails? Is the second one bad?

The second, "flat" one, is a giant ramshorn snail. They typically come in brown, pink or blue. Harmless, although they are often considered pest snails because they can breed rapidly.... although it's the mini rams that most people complain about.

the first is often called a mystery snail, Pomacea bridgesii.

The second looks like a plain old ramshorn, Planorbidae The giant ones are something different, Marisa.
