Tannin Aquatics Unboxing - Natural Substrates

Tannin Aquatics Unboxing - Natural Substrates

I got a box with some pretty cool new stuff. I'm interested in the idea of using natural dried seed pods, leaves and other plant parts in my terrariums and aquascapes. These are typical elements of underwater habitats, but they have not been used very much as decorations for displays. Leaves and pods could be especially handy for planted ripariums to use in the underwater area, while the riparium foliage grows above.

Tannin Aquatics offers a nice selection of these kinds of things, including several that I have not seen for sale anywhere else. I got a package of extra large catappa leaves, as well as several different seed or nut pods to try out. I am especially eager to use out the one that Tannin sells as Savu Pod, which comes from a South American rainforest tree, Cariniana legalis. I'm not sure about the identity of the smaller nut shells offered as heart Pods, although they resemble hickory stones. The Heart Pods are quite dense and hard and they sank right away when I put them in a tank.

The box had a wonderful natural smell when I opened it, mainly from the branded burlap bag packed inside with the other things. I'll find some way to put this cute little bag to use again.
