Disrupted sand cap during water change...

Hi y'all.
I was doing a 75% water change, which I do every couple months, and when pouring the water back I was careless and created a huge hole in my sand and disrupted all of the dirt underneath. My tank is now pretty cloudy, clearing up as the mud settles, but my fish are freaking out and my Monte Carlo carpet dislodged itself.
Anyway, do I need to buy new sand to cover up the spot I disrupted? I'm worried about mixing the sand and leftover mud up together by just pushing it back to where it was, making it prone to more mud whenever I change plant locations, etc.
