If your filter is mature you should be able to swap your substrate with minimal loss of livestock if any. A large plant mass and big water changes up front help as well.

I use floramax on top of dirt. 7 bags did the trick on my 75 gallon though I could have gotten away with 6. It's definitely not a dirt OR floramax situation though. They need to both be used together. Same goes for fluorite or Eco complete. These substrates are going to contain some mineral content but are otherwise inert with zero NPK available. That's what the dirt is for. If used alone, without any dirt, root tabs, or fert dosing regiment, your plants will starve
