Strange Growth / Algae?

Hello,

I have some vine like growth with sacs in my 75G tank that started a few weeks ago that I haven't been able to identify. It's mostly intertwined within the S. Repens carpet and in some instances has crawled along the substrate.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say Bladderwort. Probably want to get it out while there's still only a bit of it, it can apparently explode in tanks and get tangled in every single plant you have and can invade your carpeting plants.

I agree that it is bladderwort. If I were you, I'd try to take out as much as you can before it overtakes and tangles everything. It's more a small nuisance than anything. It could be an issue if you're trying to breed as I heard they could trap the fry.

Hello Chris...

Doesn't look like a form of algae to me, but I don't have much of this in my planted tanks. If you're keeping the tank water essentially clear of dissolved nitrogen, you've got nothing to worry about.

Yep this is just one kind of bladderwort. You can leave it in or tear it out, it wont grow THAT fast that it will cause a problem (at least not that kind). Its like a weed though, not something you would likely want to purposefully cultivate. It comes in with other plants as a small spec then grows into a big mess that looks kind of like javamoss but not as dense.

The kind you have will never be big enough to trap any fry, it will feed mostly off any bacteria and microscopic stuff in the water. As long as your tank has proper nutrients it wont harm the growth of any other plants. When I had some I left it in the tank, eventually something ate it all away, probably the crayfish.

Thank you for the responses! Nice to have some closure to the mystery, been working at removing it whenever it pops up but it is certainly persistent.

As mentioned, it is probably U. gibba. It is very annoying to remove.
