Has anyone tried glutaraldehyde to replace Excel?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEXN1sJihFw

i just saw this video where a guy claims to have used to replace glutaraldehyde, has anyone heard of doing this or know anyone who has tried it? I need to order some more excel and while searching i came across this and before i try it on my tank i wanted to hear some feedback.

Thanks...

Yes, I use Metricide 14 Day. Works great and a better value. Not only is it cheaper on a per volume basis, it is also stronger so you don't need to use as much. If you go that route don't add in the Activator that comes with it. Just throw it away.

Also, the active ingredient in Excel is glutaraldehyde. So Metricide is exactly the same stuff. But, IIRC, Excel is 1.5% glut whereas Metricide is 2.8%.

Nailed it. A gallon of metricide is $22 shipped online. I bought one and have been dosing my 75g regularly with it.

Metricide here as well. as said it is a higher dose so just dose less. Works (And smells) the same as Excel.

same here. way much cheaper. Dilute it with distiled water 1:2 and you essentially get Excel.

Diluting it is a good idea for a smaller tank. I have nearly 120g of tank to dose, so I just use the concentrated form. If you are dosing smaller quantities, definitely consider watering it down.

I use the 28 day. It has slightly less glut (surprisingly) than the 14 day. Just make sure you throw out the "activator" bottle. Looking at the MSDS of all 3, the 14 day has 2.6% glut the 28 has 2.5% glut and Excel has 2%. Excel uses the less common name of 1,5 pentanedial, but they are the same.

+1 on throwing out the activator.

Also I agree for smaller tanks to dilute it down to make it easier to dose, but for anything your giving more than a "Cap full" too I would keep it straight. I just fill the cap a little low and call it full. This stuff breaks down pretty fast in the tank, so the small difference in strength is not going to be much of an issue.

I've been using it, 6ml to my 40g. No problems and I think it helps with bba

Be careful, glutaraldehyde is very bad if it gets in your eyes.

So is bleach and almost every other home chemical.
Metricide is not really any worse than Excel would be. (treat like bleach and keep out of eyes and wash from skin if you get any on skin)

But YES, be careful when working with any chemical.

<<EDIT>>
Was not meant to downplay safety, just wanted to make sure that people be "Safe", but not "Scared" to mix this.

It does have that nice and clean smell to it, sort of reminds me of that Ozium air freshener for cars. Definitely better smelling than Prime.
