Tank Cycling - ADA Malaya & Ammonia?

Hi all, I have recently broken down my 300l tank ready to build it back up heavily planted. I have used ADA Malaya (3 x 9l) and currently I am trying to cycle the tank with no plants or fish (my lfs said that high ammonia leeching could destroy the plants).
I started by dosing the tank to 3 ppm with Ammonia solution but suddenly it has gone through the roof (6+ with an API liquid test kit)
My questions are -
Could the high Ammonia be the substrate and how long is it likely to leech high levels of Ammonia?
Should I be carrying out regular water changes to get the Ammonia down?
Currently it is reading 6+ for Ammonia, ph is 6 and I know I live in a soft water area ( not totally sure of the hardness). There are no Nitrites.

Thanks,

Aimer.

Yes, the high ammonia level is from the substrate. I use the same - four bags in an 80 gallon tank. I set my tank up and let it run for a couple of weeks without lights, did a large water change, planted and turned the lights on. I did not add ammonia. Wait a month or two until the plants are growing well and add fish. Worked for me. Good luck and have fun.

There's not much need to add ammonia to AS. It provides enough on it's own to cycle your tank.
