Question pantyhose to hold down driftwood?

I have a piece of driftwood that shifts with every water change and wreaks havoc (dirt everywhere as it makes big holes through the cap.) The problem is that I have a dirt tank with a sand cap, and it's up and running, so I can't do the usual thing and secure the wood to anything that I'd put below the substrate without a huge mess. (Yes, I'll definitely do that next time I set up a tank!)

I heard that I could cut some pantyhose, insert some sand, and tie it off with sand in both ends, and drape it over the base of the wood.

But does regular pantyhose have any chemicals that could hurt fish? Just No Nonsense knee highs?

Thanks!

I don't think they do. I see many people use them for putting crushed coral in their filter.

Great, thanks for the input! I plan to do it tomorrow. Before I do...Any other hazards a small, draped piece of sand-filled pantyhose might pose? (Or better ideas?)

That's a good idea, I may try it in my next tank to hold driftwood down. I use the knee highs for filter media bags so I can have extra cycled media for new tanks. No obvious problems so far, I do rinse them well before putting them in the tank.

Not sure if the panty hose will be covered when you drape it but if not you could try using fishing line to tie a heavy rock to a part of the driftwood that will be well hidden. You can also try to glue the rock to the wood (not sure of the glue you should use.) But this is a more permanent option.
