Extra tanks..what to do?

I have an AGA 20L and 29 in the basement doing nothing. I want to set them up but not sure as what. I have my established yr old 15g and new 40g breeder upstairs, so will be keeping these in the basement on a rack. What should I set them up as? Can I do quarantine plant only tanks? I do want them to be secondary tanks to the 15 and 40. Emergency backups basically, so do not want to turn them into full blown stocked tanks. Also will be def doing low cost and low tech.

I had a 58 gal that I got used on Craigslist because I wanted the tank stand that came with it. Tried to resell the tank only but got no bites so put it in the basement with the personal rule that everything on it had to be low cost and used. I put a used Eheim canister filter and old T5HO lights on it to make it a low tech tank. No substrate except in pots for a few stem plants that I really like and didn't want to toss. I am also going to try out various substrates in the pots (Tropica, Seachem, and Controsoil). Growing out anubias and needle leaf java fern on rocks, and soaking some small pieces of driftwood I got on a business trip. Doing 1/2 EI dosing once a week to minimize water changes. Stuck 3 ottos in there even though I see no algae. So far so good - great overflow tank for pruned cuttings, grow out of plants tied to rocks, grow out of plants on new pieces of wood. Low maintenance and low cost. I check on it every other day when I make it to the basement but I really don't do much to it.

If you want it solely as a quarantine tank you can simply just have water/heater and. A couple decorations. What you would need is to buy a small filter and run it as an extra filter on your established 15 or 40 and then just transfer it to the 20L or 29 when you want to quarantine and voila, instant cycle.

If your going to set up additional tanks, and you have no specific plan for them, keep something that you have never kept before. Experience something different. You may have to really seek out the fish you want, but then you'll have something few others do.
