New 70 gallon tank!

My 58 gallon had become overgrown and dominated by a sword plant, and so instead of just cleaning it out and setting it up again, I decided to get a 70 gallon Oceanic Ultimate (with the starphire front glass). I thought I could use the extra height.

So last Friday I tore down the 58 gallon and setup the 70 gallon. It took about 13 hours to do the whole thing. This is the first time that I didn't buy any new plants but instead used clippings from the 120 and also stuff that took out of the 58. Surprisingly, there were a lot of nice crypts in the 58 gallon. I mean, I knew I had planted them, but I thought they'd been taken over by the vals and sword.

I thought I'd share some photos of the before and after (before the crypts melt). I don't have a proper picture of before but here is a picture from the beginning of July, right of the 120. As you can see, there is almost no room for the fish to swim:

And here is the after picture. Notice the giant java fern. That is one of the first plants I got when I started the hobby two years ago. It is now about a foot across.

Looks like a nice start. When I recently started my 29g I was amazed at home many big crypts I had available from my shrimp / plant grow out tank.

What is the plant near the surface, center-right?

The crinkly one? That was sold as a cryptocoryne spiralis. I have found that I don't have very good luck with them. I've got a few in the 120 but they don't really take off like e.g., the balansae. I planted several in the 58 gallon (don't remember how many) and one big specimen survived. I hope this one survives the transplant!

I have a balansae that really took off when I recently moved it. The leaves aren't quite as wide though. I'll have to try spiralis as well.

No, this is 36 wide x 18 deep x 25 high. Thus it fits in the same footprint as the 58 gallon which was 36 x 18 x 21.

And here's an update for this tank - probably a bit past its peak.
