Has the wood been underwater for a bit (more than a few days)? If not, I'd guess that it's some sort of caterpillar, centipede or millipede, and suggest to remove it before it died and rotted. Buuuut, I'm not an entemologist, so yeah.

So many fish to keep, not enough aquaria.

No clue what that is but I would never put my hand in the water again after seeing one in my tank XD I suggest removing it asap in case it is harmful.

I think you have a bug know as a water tiger. See this link (offsite) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dytiscidae

They are considered a pest in the aquarium and should be removed.

It does kind of look like that. It kind of looks like mosquito larvae, too. Does it ever go to the surface, like mosquito larvae does?

davek it doesn't have legs like the picture on that page shows but I think I might have found what it is because of Google searching Dytiscidae.
Gyrinidae whirligig beetles. defiantly not a mosquito larvae doesn't have the tell tail movement of one.
