MTS is real!
HI! I'm Marty, and I have Multiple Tank Syndrome.
My first planted tank was a little 1/2 gallon that I dirted and planted a couple swords in to help my baby betta feel safe. When he outgrew that, I planted a 10 gallon, and added 5 ghost shrimp and 2 African Dwarf Frogs. Sadly, my betta didn't live very long after the switch, but the rest are enjoying the 10 gallon immensely!
Last summer our neighbor gifted us a 48x18x24 (est) tank that he had been using as a reef tank, but no longer had room for. My plan is to plant it and get a diamond back terrapin. We have built an oversized stand (so I can stand on it to clean it... I have to bend myself in half just to reach to clean the bottom as it is!!) that just needs finishing, and will be DIYing a heavy duty trickle filter. I'm thinking I may add in a few mollies, or other fish that can go brackish if I need to, and can give the turtle a bit of exercise and excitement.
It's a slow process though. We get what we can when we have the extra cash right now (my partner is starting a business, so that's where most of our extra $$$ is directed).
I do have a question about lighting... it still confuses me a bit. The tank came with what looks like an old T12 bulb and fixture. Obviously, that's not going to be enough. I know it will depend on the plants, but would an LED fixture with reds have enough lighting for the depth of this tank? It doesn't seem like they would be that much more expensive than buying a whole new fluorescent setup.
