How to keep pre-filters from dirtying up the water?

So I've noticed with my prefilter on my AquaClear 30 that when it's time to do some maintenance I'll turn the filter off, and lift it out. When I do everything that's on the pre-filter falls away and back into the tank, making the water dirtier that it was. Is there a good solution to this?

What I do is, I put a ziplock bag around it. They I take the filter off and everything stays in the bag.
