Help with choosing inhabitants of 55 gallon

My "centerpiece" fish in my 55 gallon java moss carpeted tank will be neon tetras.

I'm just not sure how many I should put in there if I want a nice "schooling" effect. I've read that 20-30 is a good number. In this case, what/how many bottom feeders should I include? I am interested in cory catfish and dwarf shrimp(red, blue, yellow, bees). Maybe several nerite snails.

Would a school of neon tetras create a heavy bioload for such a tank? Or would the java carpet benefit from the extra waste?
