Flow too strong on spec V?

I set up my fluval spec yesterday and even on the lowest setting the filter flow tosses my betta around the tank. For right now I just turned off the filter, but I was wondering if anyone has successfully modified the flow, and if so, how? I have tried turning the flow output in different positions with no success

Since I put the heater in the pump chamber I wanted more flow around the heater so I cut a small hole in the top of the return tube. It reduced flow into the tank and provided circulation around the heater. You could try that or put a sponge on the return nozzle.

I've heard of people taking a prefilter sponge and cutting it in half. Then taking the closed half and placing it over the outflow and zip-tying it in place. I have not tried this, but I was considering it when I was placing a betta in a spec III
