What should I use for filter media in a carbon-free canister?

I am hooking up a fluval can and I was wondering what kinds of media I can put in the compartments. Right now all I have in it is the sponge.

What are some good DIY methods?

Quilt batting, for floss.
Pot scrubbers.
Those are cheap alternatives.

Above are good suggestions.

Another popular one is Lava rock/pumice, which serves as bio-media with some limited mechanical filtering. You can get big bags cheap in the landscape section of most home improvement stores.

This is really what Ehiem uses in the LAV media, although you may find the pore sizes from the big bag to be quite variable and the chunks will be much larger (ie: 2" instead of 1/2"). Seachem matrix also appears to be a form of pumice with unusually fine pores..
